My name is Alan Lascelles and I am an amateur artist based in the North East of England. My interest in drawing and painting was re-ignited after building a studio at the bottom of my garden. See the 'My Studio' page for a step by step report of the construction!

With wood left over from the project I made a board by sticking pieces together, filling with Polyfilla and sanding. I doodled on the wood with ink pens, adding finishing touches with watercolour and acrylic paint.
My first picture using this technique was of The Gateshead Sage with the Tyne Bridge in the background. I was quite pleased with the result so submitted it as an entry into Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2017. I was chosen as one of the main contestants on a local heat at South Gare, near Redcar Steelworks on Teesside.
Filming took all day, but we were allocated four hours to paint our piece while on site.. After a challenging day in July 2017, I made it through to the final 3 in the heat, beating a number of professional artists.

I try to vary the media that I use and the style that I paint and draw in. Painting in watercolours, oil, acrylic, coloured pencil, pen and ink , hopefully I can creat paintings and drawings that a wide range of people will enjoy.

I love painting and drawing and admire many other artists. One thing I really struggle with is arty farty speak, so often associated with art programmes on the telly. I'm sure all of my paintings have a narrative or some underlying emotion, but all I want to do is paint pictures that people will enjoy and paintings that have a genuine likeness, whether they are animal, vegetable or mineral.
